First Look: Sonic DVDit Pro 6 Customizable workspace, other new features to this release By John Virata
Sonic Solutions has updated its DVDit Pro application to version 6 and has added a host of new features to this already robust professional level DVD authoring application. The software is a step up from the company's MyDVD authoring tool, and in hopes of bringing along MyDVD users who may have hit the creative ceiling with MyDVD, DVDit Pro 6 now offers the capability to open MyDVD projects for further refinement with tools found in DVDit Pro 6. Within the scope of this review, and because Sonic has added a boatload of new features to this upgrade, we'll take a look at some of the new features in this release.

Interface
DVDit Pro 6 sports a new interface to enhance the DVD creation process. You can choose from five custom layouts depending on the part of the DVD project you are working on. These layouts include basic, advanced, movie creation (for when you are working with video files), menu authoring for when you are creating menus for your projects, and navigation and linking, used when ensuring everything is linked up.

There are several workspace layouts, or you can customize your own layout style.

This enables you to work only with the specific windows you need at any given time. Or, you can devise your own specific workspace style and save it as a custom layout, and DVDit Pro 6 adds it to the layout drop down. This way, if you have multiple users with their own work style, they can save their own layouts and refer to them for each new job. The custom layouts can also be deleted at any time. Another new feature in DVDit Pro 6 is dual monitor support, so you can spread out your workspace across two displays to further reduce clutter.

Playlists
DVDit Pro 6 features the capability to create playlists in your projects. Playlists enable you to place in order the media that you wish to play. These can contain movie sequences as well as slideshows. To create a playlist involves dragging and dropping the media to the Project Window's Playlist section.

You can drag virtually any video or audio file format into your playlist, including AIFF, PCM, QuickTime, MPEG, Windows Media, and even Microsoft's dvr-ms recorded TV show format. DVDit Pro 6 supports up to 99 playlists per project.

Menu Design
DVDit Pro 6 features new menu templates as well as the capability to edit a template's hue, saturation, brightness and contrast. You can also customize the menu templates, adding your elements to a template or removing elements from an existing template. You also now have the capability to set video start times and end times for motion menus, so you don't have to wait for it to complete, you can set it to finish at a specified duration. In the image below, there was a text box from the "evening wedding" template. The background image was comprised of flowers and there was a big text box in the center of the template.

Content Insider #148 - The iGen
NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine. Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly.
